A disco queen has passed away. She will be remembered for innovating dance music. Her 1977 cooperation with the innovative producer Giorgio Moroder, which resulted in the single I Feel Love, has given her a legendary status. This was one of the first dance tracks produced entirely with synthesizers. It has served as an inspiration for countless of producers and dj’s through the decades and it still sounds fresh today. An amazing song:

Even though Obama is rather late on this; and even though he maybe hasn’t done as much as possible to advance the same-sex civil rights and equality agenda (ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and ordering federal lawyers to no longer defend the Defence of Marriage Act were important, but a little late); I still think this is worthy of recognition.
The President of the United States endorses same-sex marriage. That is symbolically, historically, politically and culturally, a pretty big thing. Congratulations.
In terms of analysis: support for same-sex marriage has been steadily growing among the US population, and has for some years seen majority support. The Republican Party is putting up a rearguard fight, with their most recent success just yesterday in North Carolina where people voted for an amendment to declare same-sex marriage unconstitutional. In the longer term, they can’t possibly win this (among younger voters support is overwhelming), so this move by Obama is a good one. It will serve as a rallying-point in the coming elections.
The contrast with a candidate who wants to abolish all rights for gay couples by amending the federal constitution, and who has donated to organizations that seek to “cure” gays, who bowed to pressure from bigots who demanded the head of a spokesman on foreign policy solely because he was gay: how much starker can it get?
My view politically is that this will help Obama. He will be looking to the future generations as his opponent panders to the past. The clearer the choice this year the likelier his victory. And after the darkness of last night, this feels like a widening dawn.
[Now], for the first time, the office of the American President is officially supporting a policy that a mere decade ago was deemed truly radical: same-sex marriage. Those are real achievements. And, as virtually all polls reflect – underscored by last night’s landslide defeat for marriage equality in North Carolina — they carry genuine political risk. He deserves credit for his actions in this civil rights realm.

It should go without saying that none of this mitigates the many horrendous things Obama has done in other areas, nor does it mean he deserves re-election. But just as it’s intellectually corrupted to refuse to criticize him when he deserves it, the same is true of refusing to credit him when he deserves it. Today, he deserves credit. LGBT equality is one area — and it’s an important area for millions of Americans — where he has conducted himself commendably and deserves praise. That was true before today, but even more so now.

Steve Rachmad is one of the true Dutch techno legends. His breakthrough album Secret Life Of Machines was released 17 years ago. For that occasion, a remix album is going to be released in June.
As promotion for that album and to honor Steve Rachmad, who is one of the best Dutch producers of the last two decades and maybe also the coolest, most laidback dj, this mini-documentary was made. Almost the entire techno nobility (Ricardo Villalobos, Dave Clarke, DJ Rush, Richie Hawtin, Chris Liebing, and local heroes like Dimitri, 2000 and One and Joris Voorn) pays respect to him:

A fantastic track that combines elements of American folk and country, psychedelic lo-fi sounds and a Nico-esque voice into a hazy but harmonic experimental looping blur. Really cool, listen to this.
If any video can show the corruption of President Obama, it is this one. This has nothing to do with the message and the spirit of Obama’s campaign four years ago -- which, in hindsight, was one of the most cynical and deceitful political operations in history.
Yes, I know Obama during a debate with McCain once said that he would deploy missiles in Pakistan, and that’s what he has done. But this video below doesn’t have anything to do with what was a central plank of the Obama ’08 campaign and his main argument against Bush: a restoration of civil liberties and respect for international law.
Instead, this is primitive, tribal boasting at its worst, ugly American kind. “Hey, look at me! I ordered a man sitting in a house to be pumped full with bullets, and his body dumped in the ocean! I’m president!” And then implying that Mitt Romney wouldn’t have the “courage” to do so. Well, good for you. I hope you’re very proud of your “achievement” -- because killing an already desolate man in a bunker in a desert somewhere is really the only thing that you have accomplished in the past four years.
Seriously everything about this Obama video is disgusting. But yeah, let’s hear it for those liberals mesmerizing about how “cool” Obama is.
Purity Ring blasted on the scene last year with the track ‘Ungirthed‘ – even managing to secure no. 2 and no. 5 spots in the Light Sound Dimension Best Of 2011 track lists.
While their follow-ups ‘Lofticries‘ and ‘Belispeak‘ didn’t really cut it, their new track ‘Obedear‘ (like the penchant for weird names) shows why Purity Ring was so cool in the first place.
Great basslines, a nice distorted sound, weird vocals, and very well-produced, it comes close to their first one – which even after a year manages to sound fresh.
A pretty dark idm track with nice ambient synths swirling around, released today by Squarepusher. Not quite boundary pushing, but very ok. Like the twists and turns and the complexity of the sounds.
40,000 people gather near the courtroom in Oslo to sing the 1970s song “Children of the Rainbow”, which was described by Breivik as Marxist propaganda. Fantastic.
Up to 40,000 Norwegians have staged an emotionally charged singalong in Oslo near the court building where Anders Behring Breivik is on trial for the murder of 77 people in a protest organisers said showed he had not broken their tolerant society.
“It’s we who win,” said guitar-strumming folk singer Lillebjørn Nilsen as he led the mass singalong and watched the crowd sway gently in the rain. Many held roses above their heads, and some wept.
The protest followed several days of defiant testimony from Breivik, who has admitted killing his victims but denied criminal guilt.
The crowd chose to sing Children of the Rainbow, a song that extols the type of multicultural society Breivik has said he despises and one he dismissed during the trial as Marxist propaganda.

VVD, CDA en PVV hadden daarover 7 weken in het Catshuis overlegd, maar dat beraad liep afgelopen weekend spaak. Het lijkt er op dat De Jager er in 2 dagen met VVD, CDA, GroenLinks, ChristenUnie en D66 wel in slaagt.
… zegt alles.
Waarom kon dit niet twee jaar geleden? Maar goed: dat D66, GroenLinks en de ChristenUnie het voor elkaar hebben gekregen dat bezuinigingen op speciaal onderwijs, natuur, persoonsgebonden budget en btw op kunstkaartjes geschrapt worden (!), én met VVD en CDA hervormingen op de woningmarkt en de arbeidsmarkt gaan doorvoeren, waarbij ze ook nog binnen de 3 procent blijven, is toch op z’n zachtst gezegd: hoopgevend.
Alle PVV-bullshit uit het gedoogakkoord wordt niet meer uitgevoerd. En tekent zich hier een nieuwe coalitie af? Ik hoop het. Funny: evenals twee jaar geleden zet de PvdA zichzelf buitenspel. Waar zo’n crisis al niet goed voor is.
- Update: Aan de andere kant – en daar gaat het Kamerdebat nu ook over: wat is dit akkoord de komende maanden waard? Een demissionair kabinet kan het niet echt uitvoeren, en in september zijn er weer nieuwe verkiezingen. Zoals Wilders terecht opmerkt zullen die dan niet alleen draaien om “Europa”, maar ook om dit akkoord. Na 12 september is alles weer anders.
Ik was al zo verbaasd dat D66 winnend powerplay had gespeeld. Dat kan natuurlijk helemaal niet. Het zou historisch logischer zijn als ze met een dooie mus waren blij gemaakt, zoals normaal.

Rutte lijkt ook in zijn nopjes (“de Nederlandse politiek laat zich van haar beste kant zien). Je weet het natuurlijk nooit met hem, maar zou hij dan toch ok zijn?
- Update: Positieve reacties uit het buitenland. En terecht, het is inderdaad niet niks. In twee dagen van chaos naar een (voorlopig) akkoord; we kunnen weer aankomen in Europa en bij de financiële markten (ik schrijf het met ironie omdat ik vind dat de oren daar teveel naar hangen; maar goed). Een knap staaltje verantwoordelijkheid nemen van alle betrokken actoren. Ik hoop dat het naar meer smaakt.
Toch vermoed ik een moddervette adder onder het gras. Over een paar maanden is dit akkoord null and void.
A very short documentary that sums up in three minutes the importance of the Roland TR-808 drum machine for electronic, hip hop and pop music in the last thirty years. Originally designed in 1980 as a tool for studio musicians to create demos, due to its relative cheapness it became used in the then-underground electronic and hip hop scenes to compose beats.
The by now vintage, distinctive, artificial sound of the 808 not only gave birth to the techno scene (in addition to tools like the TB-303 bass synthesizer), but also influenced the evolution of all kinds of relevant styles in the last decades. By now, their sounds are available digitally, but original machines are highly sought after. If you listen, you hear those kicks and hi-hats everywhere.

Those Andhim guys keep on delivering. This time it’s a remix of Format:B‘s “Desire”. It’s the same progressive minimal build-up as usual, with an extra instrument and a twist and turn every 30 seconds, but it works every time.
Eén van de ironieën van de sinds afgelopen weekend ontstane politieke crisis waar Nederland zich in bevindt, is dat ik – en ik niet alleen – het eigenlijk wel eens ben met Geert Wilders over de 3-procentsnorm. Een enorme keur aan economen en beleidsmakers, van het IMF, de Amerikaanse regering tot aan allerlei wetenschappers, hebben de afgelopen maanden terecht betoogd dat vasthouden aan een maximaal begrotingstekort van 3 procent van het BBP als recept om “uit de crisis te komen” een vorm van monetaristisch neoliberaal cijferfetisjisme is (zie afbeelding).
Nederland doet het per saldo helemaal niet slecht. De staatsschuld is lang niet zo groot als in vele Europese landen en de VS, de werkloosheid is niet hoog, en ook het begrotingstekort valt in de huidige Europese context echt wel mee. Waar we mee te maken hebben is een economische recessie, en die wordt grotendeels veroorzaakt door een gebrek aan consumentenvertrouwen, door de belachelijk hoge hypotheekschuld in dit land. Die wordt weer veroorzaakt door de hypotheekrenteaftrek, het behoud van welke voor CDA en VVD bij de vorige verkiezingen een breekpunt was. Dát is wat ons nu belemmert, en niet in de eerste plaats de staatsschuld of het begrotingstekort.
Als we weer economische groei willen hebben, is het laatste wat we moeten doen rücksichtlose bezuinigingen doorvoeren, VVD-style. Daar waarschuwt het IMF, nota bene, al tijden tegen. In Europa deelt Duitsland echter de lakens uit, en daar zijn politici aan de macht die in hetzelfde monetaristische cijferfetisjisme geloven als de VVD in Nederland. Dus moet er gehakt worden, ten koste van economische groei. Dit komt voort uit een bewust doorgevoerde beperking van de mogelijkheden van de politiek om de financiële markten af te weren. In plaats van een grotere rol voor de Europese centrale bank, iets waar ze in de VS en Groot-Brittannië wel gebruik van maken, zijn regeringen hier met handen gebonden om het vertrouwen van de markten te behouden. Hun enige optie, bij gebrek aan euro-obligaties of andere mogelijkheden tot verruiming van de acute nood (hoewel het ECB natuurlijk stiekem, tegen de zin van Duitsland en Nederland in, bezig is geweest met geld in het bankensysteem te pompen), is hakken in de begroting. Ten koste van alles.
De Europese Commissie (EC) legt dit ook op, en daar komt dat hele Catshuisberaad uit voort. Wilders en de PvdA, hoewel ze verschillen van mening over hervormingen, merken terecht op dat het ook wel wat rustiger aan kan met die miljarden. Juist om economische groei te stimuleren, in plaats van te dempen. Wilders is een Keynesiaan geworden. Er is heel wat voor te zeggen om in te zetten op hervormingen die op de lange termijn beter zijn, en later het begrotingstekort in evenwicht brengen, dan nu als een malle te gaan hakken.
De PvdA, Wilders, en andere linkse partijen in Nederland staan daarin niet alleen. De mogelijke verkiezingsuitslagen in Frankrijk, met een overwinning van Hollande, wijzen ook in de richting van een voorkeur van het electoraat in die richting. En in Praag wordt er ook flink gedemonstreerd. Iemand als Coen Teulings, directeur van het Centraal Planbureau (CPB), pleit hier al t
ijden voor. Idem dito Christine Lagarde van het IMF, en Geithner van de Amerikaanse regering. En zelfs kredietbeoordeelaars als Standard & Poor’s zien puur snijden als “kannibalisme”. Zoals de New York Times analyseert: Angela Merkel en haar geestverwanten komen steeds meer alleen te staan.
De vraag – en die vraag speelt al vanaf het begin van de eurocrisis – is hoe lang Duitsland, de EC, en de conservatieven en liberalen die nog de toon zetten met hun nergens in de wereld in deze strikte zin voorkomende monetaristische opvattingen, nog hun zin gaan krijgen. Laat maar lekker een tikje oplopen dat begrotingstekort, zou ik zeggen. Nu alleen inzetten op bezuinigen om die 3 procent maar in no time te halen, zonder structureel te hervormen, richt onherstelbare schade aan aan de economie én aan publieke voorzieningen en de verzorgingsstaat. Wanneer de economie weer groeit, in plaats van krimpt of matig groeit, kan er afgelost worden. En nog beter zou daarbij zijn wanneer de ECB een grotere rol zou krijgen, en/of eurobonds ingesteld zouden worden, zodat de armslag om financiële markten af te weren ook ruimer wordt.
